Celebrating 10 Years of Community

Just like so many other neighborhoods in Tacoma, the Stadium District is continuing to rise and expand, with new shops and restaurants always popping up. What was already an area with so much to offer in the way of art, cuisine and shopping, is in the middle of experiencing something of a renaissance – when you can grab a bite you eat at places as diverse as Rhein Haus, Indo Asian Street Eatery, and the soon-to-be-open Salamone's Pizza, all within a few steps of each other, you know a neighborhood's found its groove.

The Stadium District Art, Wine and Beer Walk, entering its 10th year on September 8th, aims to unite the citizens of Tacoma, and the shops and restaurants of the district, in a celebration of local art, small businesses, and deliciously curated libations. The list of participating eateries hosting tastings is truly staggering, including favorites like the Copper Door, Doyle's Public House, The Hub, Harmon Tap Room, and the Harvester, among others.

Kareem Kandi will bring his jazz talents to the Wine Garden near Columbia Bank from 5PM to 8PM.
Dozens of district businesses host local artists work during the walk.

“The Stadium Art, Wine and Beer Walk brings guests from all over to enjoy what our district has to offer,” says the event's co-chairperson Valerie Floyd. “We hope they will return again and again to enjoy our fine eateries, unique shops and therapeutic and beauty establishments. I personally am proud of our support of Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. We procure amazing items for raffle and 100% of those proceeds benefit Mary Bridge. MBCH is the region's trusted referral center for pediatric health and wellness and, along with Multicare, is the largest member of Stadium Historic District Business Association.”

Yes, that's right: along with sampling the best beer and wine around, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a raffle for some amazing prizes, for a great cause. While this year's prizes are still being finalized, last year's event included tickets to places like Tacoma Little Theatre, the Grand Cinema, and the Tacoma Art Museum; gift certificates to the best restaurants in the neighborhood; and a free hour of massage at Carpe Diem.

“I would hope that our event would have more venues in the future which would allow for more local artists to share their talent and provide event-goers an insight into our business association members and the services they provide,” says Floyd. “I have never been disappointed with the quality of talent that shares our event. I am excited that Sound Transit and W.W. Seymour Conservatory will have booths in the wine/beer garden this year. Sound Transit will provide information and be able to educate visitors on the Hilltop Tacoma Link Extension that will run through our neighborhood. The Conservatory will share upcoming events happening there and throughout Wright Park.”

Participating artist, Richard Jahn, will be displaying his lovely work at 3Dimensional Physical Therapy.

While you acquaint yourself with the businesses of Stadium District, and taste some top-notch refreshments, you will also be treated to the work of a number of artists across multiple mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, handmade jewelry and more. Along the way, there will be diverse musical performances from the Kareem Kandi World Orchestra, Upward Bound and the 5th Dimension, Ceci Omri, the Rain Delay, and Monte Godeloson.

“We like to highlight our sense of community and service to others by making this an annual event,” says Floyd. “We are thankful for generous sponsors like Columbia Bank, Bentson Printing, New Tacoma Neighborhood Council and Sound Transit. We have been able to succeed with the commitment of our committee members, all of whom live or work in the Stadium District, and of those businesses that open their doors year after year to be hosts for this great event.”

More than anything else, the Stadium District Art, Wine and Beer Walk is about fostering an adventurous spirit, and a sense of togetherness in the community. As the landscape of Tacoma continues to shift and change, it's more important than ever to get to know your fellow neighbor, support the arts, and patronize local businesses. If you can accomplish this while also enjoying some great wine, and beers from breweries like 7 Seas, Odd Otter, Pacific Brewing and Malting Co., Tacoma Brewing Company and more, what could be better?

The event goes down on September 8th, with tickets costing $25, including a signature wine glass and 12 drink tickets. More info on participating locations, featured artists, and schedules can be found at stadiumartwineandbeerwalk.com.
